Why this is awesome...
Master Ropemakers x Creature Clothes
Our dog lead collaboration with the Master Ropemakers at Chatham Historic Dockyard is one that we are very proud of. The leads are available with either rope or leather handles, in 2 thicknesses of rope – chunky or skinny. Using 3 strand Chatham Hemp, it uses no dyes, no plastics, no toxins. The rope is made on the original ¼ mile long ropewalk at Chatham, using Victorian machinery, bicycles and bells. You can even watch it being made if you visit. They splice the lead together, then we take over & add the leather handles & fobs in our Suffolk workshop. The combination of our leather work, together with this beautiful rope with its natural colour & soft fibres make for a chic, eco friendly & historic rope lead for you & your dog. You can read more about this collab on our blog.
Leather & Rope
A stunning combination. Soft, supple veg tanned leather combined with the organic earthiness of the Chatham Hemp rope. This is a beautiful lead. Both the rope and the leather mature together, becoming softer in your hands the more they are used.
A Historic Affair
The Organic Chatham Hemp used in these leads is still made on the original 1/4 mile lobg ropewalk at The Historic Dockyard, Chatham. Originally made for the Royal Navy, this rope is strong. It's a great lead and can be a good match with lead holding or chewing dogs.
The matching collar
Pair your beautiful organic chatham hemp rope and leather lead with one of our classic tan leather dog collars - understated elegance at it's best.
Choose from silver or brass metalware & sizes from Chihuahua to Great Dane.

The Leather
The leather that we use in these leads is a beautiful soft tan leather, that we tightly mould around the rope whipping & then stick, compress and stitch together in heavy thread. The edges of the leather are then sealed and painted by hand in our Suffolk workshop.
The leather is debossed with our beloved Shouty Dog at the top in either gold or silver to match the fittings, and with our logo at the bottom.
If you opt for the leather handled option, we use the same leather that we make our tan leather leads from. A 3-4mm, bevelled edge, hand sealed and painted, oiled tan leather.
We added the leather handle edition because our dogs where little terrors when they were puppies, and still are if we are honest... The moment they smell the sea air or are headed in the direction of the beach, they become huskies pulling a sled. The sled being us. The leather handle saves our hands while we work yet more on their heel training…
This product is entirely made by hand. Please expect some small individualities to each lead.
The Rope
The rope is called Chatham Organic Hemp, which takes its name from The Historic Dockyard, Chatham, Kent, England, where the rope is hand made to this day on the original Victorian ropewalk, using the original Victorian machinery. If you are a fan of the BBC’s Call The Midwife you may well have seen the very buildings where this rope is made as that is where the series is filmed. Rope has been made at Chatham since 1618 and the Master Ropemakers are the oldest ropemaking facility in the UK. This is a 3 strand rope is made from hemp found in the flax plant. It uses no dyes, no plastics, no toxins. Each lead in the collection is very slightly unique as they are entirely hand crafted, the handle spliced together in the traditional way by the craftsmen and women at Chatham.
The beauty of Chatham Hemp is that the more it is used the softer the rope becomes in your hands.
The Fittings - silver or brass?
Our trigger hooks, "O" rings and studs are all made in solid brass. The silver finish versions are nickle plated solid brass.
The sizes
Our dog leads measure approximately 1m long.
The Chunky edition uses 14mm Chatham Hemp.
The Skinny edition uses 10mm Chatham Hemp.
Taking care of the leather
Before leaving our workshop the collar will have been treated with Neatsfoot oil to protect against water. Ideally we recommend treating this lead as you would a pair of leather shoes – it may not last as long if not looked after.
A nice coat of saddle soap on the leather handle every now and then will create a beautifully soft and supple lead and will help it to not only last longer but to age with grace and beauty too.
Our promise to you
Not only are our collars & leads beautifully hand made with love, they are also guaranteed for 6 months from date of purchase against breakage or loss of studs.
Our collars & leads tend to last for many years, often a lifetime. If you look after them, they will last longer.
We make leather care kits to help you do this, however if the collar or lead is in need of some added TLC we also offer a collar & lead service for £20 (inc postage back to you) where we will replace all rivets, any missing studs and clean and treat the leather.

Our Brighton Shop
In December 2021 we opened the doors of our very first shop in the heart of Beautiful Brighton. It has been an amazing adventure, moving to such a legendary city on the sea, meeting our customers and becoming a part of the local community. We have a little workshop and personalisation station in our shop to make customers orders while they wait, while our main Creature Clothes Workshop remains on the East Coast of England, in an old WW2 Aircraft Hangar on the East Coast of Suffolk. Our products truly are designed and hand made in the UK by us.
