About our leather dog leads

Our hand crafted leather dog leads truly are an absolute classic. Handmade by us in either our Brighton or Suffolk workshops, the leather is gently worked to create a strong lead that is soft against your hand, and that will just get better with age.

The edges of the leather are champhered, smoothed, sealed and hand painted to create a comfortable handle. The leather is then treated with Neatsfoot Oil to give it a coat of waterproofing and suppleness to meet you & your dog’s demands.

The studs are hand made exclusively for us by Menorcan artisans. Each stud is individually cut from solid brass and the rivet back welded on by hand to make the stud as strong as possible.

Style, function and true individuality - pretty much the Creature Clothes ethos all wrapped up in one beautiful dog lead that truly will make your dog stand out from the pack.

Leather & Studs

We use 4 gorgeous colours of leather to hand made our dog leads. Add in 3 different designs of stud in either silver or brass and you really can choose the perfect combo that's just right for you and your dog.

Flexible style

Our leads have an "O" ring between the handle and the main body of the lead for added flexibility. Clip on a poo bag pouch or use it to fasten the lead around you while your dog is off lead. Double the trigger hook back to make a shorter lead or clip your dog to the table for a handsfree coffee. Nice!

Plain Leather Dog Collars

All of the info...

Red, Black, Tan or Choc - choose the best leather for your dog.

The leather that we use is 3-4mm thick in black, tan, chocolate or red. Each leather holds different properties, outlined below to help you find the perfect match for your pooch.

Black leather- really long lasting, supple & strong.

Tan leather - will age beautifully as worn & the colour will deepen with time.

Chocolate Brown leather - strong & beautifully rich in colour – looks amazing with brindle dogs.

Red leather - bright and fun, may not last as long as the natural veg tanned colours.

A note on red leather for dog collars (this is not a problem for leads but should be considered when buying a matching set): Red leather is a strange and tricky thing – we have tried many different leathers over the years – some deepen to a brown, others run like crazy.  So we have created our own red leather and have it specially made for us.  At it’s core is a natural skin that we have surface dyed on the top and underside to our own pantone reference. This reduces colour change, but primarily it is to stop the red from running into your dogs fur. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason as to why red leather will run into some dogs fur and not others. We have tested & researched endlessly and can only conclude that it must be down to the oils in certain dogs coats causing the leather to run. For this reason we have created a one sided red leather especially for white furred dogs. It is red on the top and left natural underneath, further reducing the risk of run.  If you have a white dog – please choose the red leather for white fur and we will use this special one sided red leather for you.

Leather in any colour is a natural product and some colour transference can happen on initial wearing. In a similar way to a new pair of dark denim jeans that turn your hands and legs blue on first wearing, it should soon stop.

Fittings - Are you silver or brass?

Our trigger hooks, "O" rings and studs are all made in solid brass.  The silver finish versions are nickle plated solid brass. The stud backs are also hypoallergenic brass.

Stars, hearts, bones, personalised or plain

Either studded or plain, our leather leads really are beautiful. We can only make the wider leads with studs - the skinny version is too thin to safely attach the adornments.

If you are looking at a studded lead, here is the info on the studs: Our studs are exclusively hand made for us by Menorcan artisans. Each stud is individually punched out of sheets of solid brass. The rivet backs are then welded on, one by one, by hand. This creates the strongest bond possible. We use brass because it is best for the environment, very strong and the stud will not break or shear off like other, cheaper, composite metals. The silver colour studs are nickel plated solid brass. All of our studs are attached to the collars by us in our workshops in Suffolk or Brighton. The studs have brass backs for a hypoallergenic finish. Due to the nature, mischief and fun loving curiosity of dogs (diving through hedges, rolling in muddy puddles…), occasionally we will be contacted to say a dog has lost a stud from their collar, or very rarely from a lead (in all of our 22 years of product testing this has never happened to one of our dogs collars despite much, MUCH mischief). If this does happen please contact us and we can replace the stud for you.

Double check the size

Our dog leads measure approximately 1m long and are 20mm wide.

Taking care of the leather

Before leaving our workshop the collar will have been treated with Neatsfoot oil to protect against water. Ideally we recommend treating this lead as you would a pair of leather shoes – it may not last as long if not looked after.

A nice coat of saddle soap every now and then will create a beautifully soft and supple lead and will help it to not only last longer but to age with grace and beauty too.

Our promise to you

Not only are our collars & leads beautifully hand made with love, they are also guaranteed for 6 months from date of purchase against breakage or loss of studs.

Our collars & leads tend to last for many years, often a lifetime. If you look after them, they will last longer.

We make leather care kits to help you do this, however if the collar or lead is in need of some added TLC we also offer a collar & lead service for £20 (inc postage back to you) where we will replace all rivets, any missing studs and clean and treat the leather.

Our Brighton Shop

In December 2021 we opened the doors of our very first shop in the heart of Beautiful Brighton. It has been an amazing adventure, moving to such a legendary city on the sea, meeting our customers and becoming a part of the local community. We have a little workshop and personalisation station in our shop to make customers orders while they wait, while our main Creature Clothes Workshop remains on the East Coast of England, in an old WW2 Aircraft Hangar on the East Coast of Suffolk. Our products truly are designed and hand made in the UK by us.
